Music like a new day... reality born out of a dream, tranquilly gathering its strength and often merely hinting at what it could do, should it wish to. You will catch a glimpse of the pianist smiling at the notion. Jakub Zahradnik smiles often. Above all, however, it is his hands that are smiling. Where we would be searching for words, they are simply finding music. This music is new in its each and every tone – new in the word’s most positive connotations. Far from being the product of a mixing desk, here the very birth of music is revealed: here it is ever-present; all you have to do is find it. And seldom does a man get closer to it than here. This is an experience that should not be missed live. Both these CDs excite the desire to hear more from Jakub Zahradník, and not just among lovers of silent tones. The demand is increasing. I wish to this pianist packed auditoria.

Musik wie ein neuer Tag... traumgeborene Wirklichkeit, die ihre
Kraft in der Ruhe entfaltet, oft nur andeutet, wozu sie fähig ist,
wenn sie das will. Den Pianisten sehen Sie bei diesem Gedanken
lächeln. Jakub Zahradnik lächelt oft. Imgrunde sind es die Hände, die
lächeln. Wo unsereins nach Worten sucht, finden sie einfach - ihre
Musik. Diese ist Ton für Ton neu, im besten Sinne des Wortes. Hier
geht es nicht um Klangnebel, hier offenbart sich das Geheimnis, wie
Musik entsteht: Sie ist immer schon da, will nur aufgespürt sein - und
so nahe wie hier ist man selten dabei. Ein Erlebnis, das man sich live
nicht entgehen lassen sollte. Diese beiden CD's machen Appetit auf
mehr Musik von Jakub Zahradnik. Am Publikum für leisere Töne sollte es
nicht liegen, da wächst der Bedarf. Ich wünsche diesem Pianisten volle
Hallen.

Hudba jako nový den... ze sna zrozená skutečnost, která poklidně
rozvíjí svou sílu a často jen naznačuje, čeho je schopna, když se jí
zachce. Zahlédnete, jak se pianista při této představě usmívá. Jakub
Zahradník se usmívá často. Především jsou to však jeho ruce, které se
usmívají. Kde my bychom hledali slova, nacházejí ony prostě hudbu. Ta
je v nejlepším slova smyslu v každičkém jednotlivém tónu nová. Není to
záležitost mixážního pultu, zde se odkrývá tajemství samotného zrození
hudby: je tu stále přítomna, jen ji objevit. A tak blízko jako tady,
je při tom člověk zřídkakdy. Zážitek, který byste si na živo neměli
nechat ujít. Obě tato CD vzbuzují chuť poslechnout si od Jakuba
Zahradníka více. A to nejen u posluchačů tichých tónů. Zájem o ni
roste. Přeji tomuto klavíristovi plné sály.

CD Pavla Kapitánová a Jakub Zahradník Pouť přes vyhnanství /
Exile Street
This unique recording has stemmed from the collaboration of two
outstanding personalities – poet and musician Jakub Zahradník and
singer Pavla Kapitánová. Unfortunately, it is also the duo’s last
recording, because in the summer (22nd July 2007) Pavla Kapitánová
died in a car accident. She was a singer from the family of Mahalie
Jackson, Eva Olmerová or Janis Joplin – artists, whose voice and
expression emanated an entire armful of feeling, temperament and
sincerity. And yet, at the same time, she was also different,
original. She possessed the gift of a great and vibrant voice, which
was perfectly suited for rock bands, with which she had actually also
sung. Even though she could have probably gone on to make a big career
in pop-music, she was not interested. She also successfully performed
in musicals, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Rusalka-Muzikál, Joan
of Arc and others. Their affinity with Jakub Zahradník was probably
based on a certain spiritual understanding as far as life’s values
were concerned and perhaps also, as can be ascertained from their
songs, a certain sadness or fear of today’s aggressive world, which
they succeed in originally reflecting (without a trace of
resignation). Having said that, this was still an encounter of two
very different temperaments. A poet, whose verse is somewhat unusual
for song lyrics (,,I welcome the eyes of the multitude” in the song A
New Day, ,,it’s somewhere far out in the fields / there’s many a head
/ ...waiting to be met” in The Cow Cathedral in the Fields, etc.). No
superficial verse mongering, but rather fragments from everyday human
lives, characterised by an original, almost bleak approach, but at the
same time a pianist whose playing is melancholically kind and smooth.
He preludes, plays the blues, ballads, toys with triplets and other
fineries, totally submerged in his music. Standing beside him is a
singer with the most resonant voice, expressive, complete with cries
and urgency. Nonetheless, she also knows how to handle her voice, how
to make it silent, gentle, she knows how to just talk and he, on the
other hand, can add intensity where it is needed. No doubt it was
their differences that made it possible for them to complement one
another artistically.
A part of the reason why I enjoy the present recording, as well as the
duo’s songs that had been published earlier (CD Život sám/A life
Alone, 2001, CD/book The Alchemy of Life, 2004, Jakub’s book of poetry
Ztepilé viržínko/A Graceful Cheroot, 2004) so much is that they defy
all musical categorisation. Perhaps chanson blues? And what if I dare
to suggest that it is so original, so unmistakable, because it is
unlike anything else? When you hear this recording for the first time,
maybe the songs will sound a little monolithic to you. But upon a
second, third and all successive listenings you will be finding in
them gems of everyday poetry, as well as delicacies of music and
singing, meanders, peaks and plains... A great pity indeed that these
two cannot continue in their collaboration. Plans had already been
made for new songs, concerts and another CD. In May 2007 František
Rychtařík’s Producentské centrum launched a pilot single recording
entitled Twice about Love, which suggests that the instrumental part
of the project was to expand into a jazz trio, with the piano at the
lead, complemented by other instruments and voices. A shift had also
taken place in Pavla’s interpretation, as can be heard in the first
song on this CD, which is a studio recording from the above-mentioned
single, recorded live. All the other songs come from a Czech Radio’s
recording of the performance at the Original Chanson Festival in
autumn 2004.

CD Pavla Kapitánová a Jakub Zahradník Pouť přes vyhnanství /
Exile Street
Tato jedinečná nahrávka vznikla ze spolupráce dvou mimořádných osobností, básníka a muzikanta Jakuba Zahradníka a zpěvačky Pavly Kapitánové. Bohužel je to i nahrávka poslední, protože Pavla Kapitánová v létě (22. 7. 2007) umřela při automobilové nehodě. Byla to zpěvačka z rodu Mahalie Jackson, Evy Olmerové či Janis Joplin, tedy zpěvaček, které do svého hlasu a výrazu pouštěly celou obrovitou náruč svých pocitů, temperamentu a upřímnosti. Ale samozřejmě byla i jiná, svá. Měla dar velkého znělého hlasu, který se výborně hodil pro rockové kapely, s nimiž také zpívala. Ačkoli mohla pravděpodobně udělat velkou kariéru v oblasti popu, to ji nezajímalo. Zpívala rovněž úspěšně v muzikálech, například v Jesus Christ Superstar, Rusalce Muzikálu, Johance z Arku a dalších.
S Jakubem Zahradníkem ji nejspíše spojovala jistá duchovní souhra týkající se životních hodnot a snad, jak lze vycítit z jejich písní, i určitá obava či smutek z dnešního agresivního světa, jehož vlastní a nikoli rezignovaný otisk utvořili. Přitom se tu sešly temperamentem dvě odlišné bytosti. Poeta, jehož verše jsou pro písně spíše neobvyklé (,,vítám oči zástupů” ve skladbě Do nového dne, ,,je kdesi v dálce v polích / je tam plno hlav / ...stojí za pozdrav” v Kraví katedrále v polích aj.). Žádná ,,láska-páska”, spíš útržky z lidských všedních dnů v originálním až syrovém pojetí a přitom klavírista s klavírem laskavě a hladivě melancholickým. Preluduje, bluesuje, baladuje, hraje si s triolami a dalšími kudrlinkami, celý do nich ponořen. A vedle něj zpěvačka s hlasem jako zvon, s expresívním výrazem, s výkřiky a naléhavostí. Nicméně, ona svůj hlas dovede ovládat, ztišit, zněžnit, dovede vyprávět a on zase přidává na razanci, kde je třeba. Určitě se umělecky doplňovali právě svými odlišnostmi.
Předkládané album jakož i písničky, které této dvojici již vyšly dříve (CD Život sám/A life Alone, 2001, CD/kniha The Alchemy of Life, 2004, kniha textů J. Z. Ztepilé viržínko, 2004) jsou mi sympatické i tím, že neodpovídají žádným hudebním škatulkám. Možná bluesový šanson? A co když si troufnu říci, že je to natolik původní, s ničím nezaměnitelné, protože nepodobné ničemu? Písničky na tomto albu, pokud je uslyšíte poprvé, vám možná budou trochu splývat. Ale při druhém třetím a dalším poslechu v nich budete nacházet civilně poetické perly a hudební a pěvecké jemnosti, zákruty, výšky a nížiny... Jistě škoda, že oba nemohou ve své spolupráci pokračovat. V plánu byly nové písně, koncerty a další CD. V květnu 2007 vyšel u Producentského centra Františka Rychtaříka pilotní singl Dvakrát o lásce, který napovídá, že nástrojové obsazení se mělo rozrůst na jazzové trio s vévodícím klavírem a dalšími přídavnými nástroji a hlasy. Posun je patrný i v Pavlině interpretaci, jak dokládá první píseň na tomto CD, což je studiová nahrávka ze zmíněného singlu, nahraná živě. Vše ostatní je záznam z vystoupení na Festivalu autorského šansonu z podzimu 2004, jak jej natočil Český rozhlas.
